The four terms that matter

  • PS5UPDATE.PUP is the official PlayStation 5 system software file you supply yourself.
  • Vulkan 1.3 is the graphics interface Vesper renders through, and it lives in your GPU driver.
  • DualSense is the PlayStation 5 controller, including its haptics and adaptive triggers.
  • Stable, Beta, Test are the only three compatibility labels we use.

Why a glossary at all

Emulation vocabulary is full of borrowed words, and most guides assume you already know them. If you have never installed firmware or heard of a graphics API, the setup steps read like a different language.

These entries exist so the rest of the site can stay short. Each one is written for someone who has simply bought a PS5 game and wants it to run on the PC already sitting on their desk.

Questions

What is a PS5 emulator, in one sentence?

Software that reproduces enough of the PlayStation 5 on a Windows PC for the system software, and then your own games, to run on it.

Do I need to understand any of this to use Vesper?

Only PS5UPDATE.PUP really matters, because you have to supply that file yourself. The rest is background.

Is emulation the same as downloading games?

No. An emulator is a runtime, not a store. Vesper includes no games and expects you to own what you play.
