# Vulkan 1.3

The graphics interface Vesper draws through. It lives in your driver, which is why old drivers break games.

## Facts (2026-10-13)

- **What it is:** A low-level graphics API
- **Version required:** 1.3
- **Provided by:** Your GPU driver
- **Vendors:** NVIDIA and AMD desktop GPUs

## What it does

Vulkan is a graphics interface: the agreed language between a program and your graphics card. Vesper describes the frame it wants in Vulkan terms, and your driver turns that into work the GPU performs.

Version 1.3 matters because emulating the PlayStation 5 needs the specific modern features it introduced. An earlier version does not expose enough for the renderer to do its job.

## Why your driver is the thing to update

Vulkan support ships inside the graphics driver, not inside Windows. The same graphics card can fail the Vulkan 1.3 check on an old driver and pass it on a current one, with no hardware change in between.

This is the single most useful fact on this page. Before concluding that your GPU is too old, install the current driver from your GPU maker's own site or app. It is also the first item on [the low-FPS checklist](/howto/fix-low-fps) for exactly this reason.

## What it does not mean

Vulkan 1.3 support is a requirement, not a performance promise. Passing the check means Vesper can render; it says nothing about how quickly, and we publish no resolution or frame-rate figures.

It is also unrelated to whether a given title works. A game's chip on [the dashboard](/dashboard) reflects the emulator's progress with that title, not your graphics interface.

## FAQ

### How do I know whether my GPU supports Vulkan 1.3?

Install the current driver from your GPU maker first, then check their specifications for your card. Most reasonably recent desktop GPUs qualify once the driver is up to date.

### Can I use DirectX instead?

No. Vesper renders through Vulkan 1.3, and there is no alternative path to select.

### Does Windows update include Vulkan?

No, which catches a lot of people out. Vulkan arrives with the graphics driver, so Windows Update alone may leave you behind.

### Will Vulkan 1.3 make my games faster?

It is what makes them render at all. Meeting the requirement is necessary, not an optimisation.
