# Install firmware

Vesper bundles no firmware. You supply the official PS5UPDATE.PUP, and the app installs it in one menu step.

## Facts (2026-10-13)

- **Menu path:** File then Install Firmware
- **File needed:** PS5UPDATE.PUP
- **Source:** Sony's official system-software page or your own console
- **Bundled with Vesper:** No

## Get the file first

PS5UPDATE.PUP is the PlayStation 5 system software package. Sony publishes it on the official PS5 system software update page, and you can also take it from your own console.

We do not host PUP files, keys, or dumps, and we never will. Download it from Sony's official page so you know what you have, then keep it somewhere you can find again.

## Install it in Vesper

1. Open Vesper.

2. Choose File, then Install Firmware.

3. Select your PS5UPDATE.PUP in the file dialog.

4. Wait while the app copies and verifies it. Larger packages take a while.

5. Check the sidebar: firmware should read as installed, ready to boot.

Once that indicator is set you can move on to [booting system software](/setup/boot-system-software).

## Why Vesper cannot do this for you

System software is Sony's, not ours. Shipping it inside the installer, or downloading it on your behalf, would mean distributing something we have no right to distribute.

So the step stays manual. It takes a couple of minutes once and does not need repeating unless you deliberately move to a different firmware package.

## When it goes wrong

- The dialog rejects the file: confirm it really is a .PUP and that the download finished.

- Installation stops partway: a truncated download is the usual cause, so fetch it again.

- Firmware installs but nothing boots: that is [the boot step](/setup/boot-system-software), not this one.

- The app reports firmware missing after an update: reinstall the same package through the same menu.

## FAQ

### Where do I get PS5UPDATE.PUP?

From Sony's official PS5 system software page, or from your own console. Vesper does not bundle firmware and we do not host PUP files, keys, or dumps.

### Is PS5UPDATE.PUP safe to download?

The copy Sony publishes on its own official system-software page is the one to use. Avoid third-party mirrors, which is the whole reason we point at the official source.

### Do I need firmware to boot PS5 games?

Yes. Without system software installed there is nothing for your games to run inside, and the launcher has nothing to boot.

### Does Vesper update firmware itself?

No. If you want a different package you install it yourself through File then Install Firmware, exactly as the first time.
