# Returnal — PS5 emulator

Stable, and the title where a crash costs you an entire run rather than a checkpoint.

## Facts (2026-10-13)

- **Status:** Stable
- **Notable feature:** Adaptive trigger alt-fire
- **Risk:** A crash ends the run
- **Controller:** DualSense recommended

## Where it stands

Returnal carries a Stable chip, which matters more here than almost anywhere else in the app. A roguelike has no mid-level checkpoint to fall back on, so a crash two hours into a cycle is not a minor inconvenience.

We hold this title to that standard when deciding its status. Booting is not enough; it has to survive a full run.

## Adaptive triggers do real work

Returnal maps alternate fire to a half-pressed trigger, so the DualSense is not a cosmetic choice. On a pad without adaptive triggers you lose a control rather than a flourish, and have to rebind it.

Connect over USB for the most consistent behaviour, and see [the DualSense entry](/words/dualsense-pc-controller) if you want the background on what haptics and adaptive triggers actually are.

## Settling your machine first

Because a crash is expensive, it is worth the few minutes of preparation: current graphics driver, overlays off, and the latest Vesper build installed before you start a cycle.

Early emulation still produces the occasional glitch, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

## FAQ

### Do adaptive triggers work in Returnal on PC?

DualSense adaptive triggers are supported, and this is the title that most needs them. Without a DualSense you will want to rebind alternate fire.

### Will a crash lose my run?

A roguelike cycle has no mid-run save, so yes. It is the reason we apply a stricter bar before giving this title a Stable chip.

### Is Returnal demanding?

It is less storage-hungry than the large open worlds but busy on the GPU during fights. The recommended spec is a sensible target.
